How to know what you really want?

Do you recognise that nagging feeling that something is not quite right? You have a nice life and there is nothing to really complain about, but still you have doubts. Your intuition keeps nudging you that there could be something else for you, something more.

But what could that be?

What is it that you really want?

How can you figure that out?

In this blog post I’m discussing a commonly asked question “how to know what you really want in life?” and I’ll provide a shortcut to get you on the right track.

How to find your starting point towards the life you want?

The question I get most often as a coach is:

“How do I know that I’m doing it right?”

An interesting question as it suggests that validation only comes from external sources. That there somehow is a right way, one step-by-step guideline we can all follow towards eternal happiness.

But let’s be honest, we all know that is not how it works. Instead, true happiness and fulfillment can be found in very many different ways. This is awesome news, because it means it can also be found by you and I’m going to share with you how.

It all starts with one question: what is it that drives you?

This might seem impossible to answer but in fact you will find that every person has their own set of core beliefs that form the basis of answering this exact question. This set of core beliefs or values is your very own starting point.

These values are the perfect anchor to shape your goals around.

By identifying what your values are you can start shifting your mindset and make choices that are more aligned with what drives you.

What are values and why are they important?

Values are the core concepts, ideas, and beliefs that act as guiding principles in our lives. They are reflections of what is most important to us in life.

Personal values are at the core of who we are, as our authentic selves. They act as a motivating factor behind our decisions and behaviours.

Why should I define my values?

Defining your personal values and exploring where you gained them from can be a very helpful and insightful process.

  • Gaining this awareness allows you to be mindful of what is important to you.

  • Living life with your values in mind allows you to feel more connected to your sense of self and feel more fulfilled.

  • Uncovering your values allows you to make choices that align with those values, ultimately reinforcing who you are and what is important to you.

When you learn to navigate and apply the values in your everyday life, you will find the path towards an intentional and meaningful life for you. In my experience, those who are aligned with their values and have designed their lives accordingly are the brightest, happiest people.

They have found their flow.
