Why life coaching? - 5 reasons why working with a life coach is a good idea
I was watching a sports match the other day and I heard the commentator say
“This athlete has achieved incredible results with this coach”
This spiked my interest. When it comes to achieving athletic results at the highest level, we expect the athlete to be supported. We are aware that there is at least one professional there to guide this athlete and keep them on track.
If this is so normal for athletes, why not embrace this simple support system in day to day life? Why do we expect ourselves to thrive and achieve the best results all on our own?
In this blog post I’ll share the 5 main reasons why working with a life coach is a good idea.
What is a life coach?
We know that in sports, coaches are there to motivate, push and sculpt athletes to the prime of their abilities. They challenge athletes to work through physical and metal boundaries and reach for goals that are beyond what they thought was possible.
In life we also face challenges. We might experience blockages that keep us from reaching our full potential. It’s hard to navigate through distractions without loosing sight of our dreams and goals. An outside perspective can be really helpful in situations like this.
So what is a life coach?
Quite frankly a life coach is a partner. A driving force behind your journey towards success, whatever that might look like for you. A coach will guide you, will help you put things in perspective and will make you see things in a different light. A coach is also there to ask the painful questions, to help you notice the things that might have been holding you back for a long time.
So now you know what a life coach is, here is a list of 5 reasons why it is such a good idea to work with one.
Reason 1: Life coaching gives clarity on what you want in life.
What I often hear from new clients is that they feel like they are living their live according to someone else’s rules or wishes. This can be a partner or a family member or even just societies expectations as a whole.
This doesn’t feel right but in the meantime it is very hard to come up with a better, more fitting alternative.
How can we create a clear vision of what we want in life when we are so used to just keep going at all costs?
A life coach can help you to pump the break for a second and take a step back. Creating perspective isn’t easy, but a life coach is there to help you navigate through the noise and get clear on what you want.
Reason 2: Life coaching helps you to identify and break patterns that hold you back
Almost everybody has experience with some form of self sabotage. We can still function despite of this, but to truly thrive we need to find a way to fix this.
It’s like wearing a shirt with a hole in it. You are missing a piece but you are still at least wearing something. To fix it you have to take the shirt off, find the exact place where the hole is and neatly stitch it back together.
The easiest thing: Just to keep wearing the shirt and ignore the hole, you just keep doing what you’ve always done.
The path to success: Requires action and it means you will have to be vulnerable at some point. After all you will be shirtless for a little while.
A life coach can help you to identify where the holes in your shirt are, what are unconscious patterns of behaviour that keep you back? Also a coach will support you in fixing the holes, breaking the patterns and find new routines that enable you to reach your full potential.
Reason 3: Life coaching makes you peak your potential
Speaking of potential, do you dare to truly open yourself up to what you are capable of? A life coach can help with broadening your views. Like the sports coach I spoke about earlier, a life coach is there to challenge and motivate you.
By asking the right questions, paradigms can be shifted and new possibilities can come to light. A life coach will help you to:
Set realistic goals
Stimulate you to continuously learn
Motivate you to go the extra mile
They will help you rediscover your unique assets, increase your knowledge and advance your skills to the next level. Eventually reaching for that peak potential,
the best and most aligned version of yourself.
Reason 4: Life coaching boosts your decision making skills
Often it is not so much the lack of opportunities that hold us back. It is the decision making that is hard. We tend to make decisions with our brain, choosing what is logical not necessarily that what feels right. A life coach can help you with broadening your skill set so you can make decisions that are more aligned with your whole being.
These skills are soft skills. Skills that focus on gaining and maintaining self-confidence, building relationships with others, motivation and self-awareness.
Mastering those skills will make you regain full trust in yourself.
And with this trust, decision making will become easy.
Reason 5: Undevided attention and support from your life coach
Last but not least, your coach will be your rock. A coach wants nothing less then for you to succeed, whatever that may look like for you. A life coach will provide a safe space where you can loose all pretence and just be yourself.
A coach is not your colleague, friend or mum.
Your coach is unbiased and is there solely for you without having any self-interest in the matter.
With honest feedback, a fresh perspective and actionable guidance, a life coach will reinforce the behaviour that makes you reach for the stars.
So there you have it, 5 reasons why working with a life coach is a good idea.
Is it impossible to figure all these things out on your own? No, but it can take a long time and it will for sure cost a lot of energy. If you are serious about succeeding in life, about reaching your full potential, a life coach is an absolute must have.
